Abstract
This study aims to understand interpersonal communication between drug users in early adulthood in Pekanbaru City. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the concept of interpersonal communication according to Joseph A. DeVito, which includes aspects of openness, empathy, supportive attitudes, positive attitudes, and equality. Data was obtained through interviews with purposively selected informants. The results of the study showed that communication between drug users was characterized by openness and high empathy, especially when sharing experiences of use and personal problems. They provide each other with emotional support and feel more understood by their fellow users than by people outside the circle. However, this communication also strengthens the bonds in the abuse cycle, which hinders the recovery process and distances them from formal support such as rehabilitation or family. These findings show the importance of a communication approach in prevention, early intervention, and early adult rehabilitation of drug users so that they can get out of dependence in a sustainable manner.
