Abstract

Smoking today is no longer limited to adults; it is also increasingly prevalent among teenagers, many of whom are beginning to discover and experiment with cigarettes. In the city of Pekanbaru, it is quite common to see many teenage girls smoking in public places. For some of them, especially teenage girls, smoking has become part of their lifestyle and daily habits due to changes brought about by modern developments. This study aims to explore in greater depth the phenomenon of smoking among teenage girls in Pekanbaru. It focuses on the motives that drive teenage girls who previously never smoked to become active smokers, as well as their personal experiences throughout the process of becoming smokers. This research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. The subjects in this study consist of five (5) teenage girls, selected using snowball sampling technique. Data collection techniques include semi-structured interviews, nonparticipant observation, and documentation. The validity of the data is tested using method triangulation. The theory used in this research is Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory, which distinguishes between two types of motives: 'because of' motives and 'in order to' motives. 'Because of' motives refer to the underlying reasons for the informants' smoking behavior, such as emotional pressure, family environment, and peer influence. Meanwhile, 'in order to' motives explain the goals the informants wish to achieve by smoking, such as seeking inner peace, satisfying curiosity, and the desire to be part of a group.
