Abstract
The background of this research is related to the phenomenon of declining understanding of the young generation's understanding of the Malay symbol of marriage in Natuna Regency. Even though the symbols contain philosophical values and cultural identities that should be maintained and inherited. This study aims to analyze the meaning of wedding symbols, such as betel leaf, potpourri, bird- shaped towel, and dowry using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which divides meaning into three layers: denotation, connotation, and myth. This research is qualitative descriptive with non-participatory observations and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, cultural actors, and communities involved in the wedding procession. The findings of the study indicate that each symbol is not only aesthetic and traditional, but also contains moral, spiritual, and social messages that reflect hope, respect, and the value of togetherness in a household. From the results of this study, it is recommended the need for socialization and documentation in a sustainable manner using education and digital media so that the tradition is interpreted in its entirety by the nation's successors.
