Abstract

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is a form of social anxiety that arises when someone feels worried about missing out on information, experiences, or important moments experienced by others, especially through social media. One factor assumed to play a role in controlling the tendency of FOMO is emotional intelligence. This study aims to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and fear of missing out (FoMO) in final year students at the Islamic University of Riau. The research subjects were 235 final year students of the Faculty of Psychology. The sampling technique used was conveniens sampling.. The data collection method used an emotional intelligence scale of 30 items, and a fear of missing out (FoMO) scale of 15 items. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho statistics. The results showed that there was a significant negative relationship between emotional intelligence and fear of missing out (FoMO) in final year students at the Islamic University of Riau. This results are indicated by the Spearman correlation value of r = -0,537 and p = 0,000 (p < 0,05). This means that the higher the emotional intelligence, the lower the level of fear of missing out (FoMO) in final year students at the Islamic University of Riau.
