Abstract

The police force is a state institution that plays a crucial role in maintaining public security and order, enforcing the law, and protecting, guiding, and serving the community. Within the police work environment, officers are frequently confronted with various high-pressure situations, such as heavy workloads, safety risks, and significant social responsibilities. These conditions can trigger work-related stress which, if not properly managed, may negatively impact both job performance and the psychological well-being of personnel. One of the factors believed to contribute to levels of work stress is emotional intelligence, which refers to an individual's ability to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions effectively—both their own and those of others. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The population consisted of all police officers at the Riau Regional Police (Polda Riau), with a sample of 347 individuals selected using random sampling techniques. The research instruments used were an emotional intelligence scale and a work stress scale, both of which had been tested for validity and reliability. The data obtained were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The results showed a significant influence of emotional intelligence on work stress, with a Z value of -22.678 and a significance level of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate a significant difference in the level of work stress between officers with high and low emotional intelligence. This confirms that emotional intelligence plays an important role in helping police officers manage job-related pressures and maintain psychological stability while performing their duties.
