Abstract
Emotional eating is excessive eating behavior used as a coping mechanism to deal with stress. Students working on their theses tend to experience stress, which in this context is referred to as academic stress. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between academic stress and emotional eating. The research method used was a quantitative correlational approach with a sample size of 400 students working on their theses in the city of Pekanbaru, selected using cluster random sampling. This study utilized the Student Life Stress Inventory (SLSI) as the measurement tool for the academic stress variable and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) subscale for the emotional eating variable. The statistical analysis employed was the Spearman rho correlation. The results of this study showed a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.280 with a significance level of 0.000 (p<0.05). It can be concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship between emotional eating and academic stress. An increase in academic stress is followed by an increase in emotional eating. The results of this study imply the importance of implementing academic stress management programs by relevant institutions.
