Abstract

Late adolescence, especially in college students, is a period of developmental transition marked by rapid physical and mental changes. In this phase, students tend to want to look perfect in the eyes of others, especially in terms of physical appearance. Dissatisfaction with physical appearance can trigger behaviors that lead to a tendency to body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a mental disorder characterized by an overbelief in physical deficiencies, even if these deficiencies are minimal or non-existent. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and the tendency to body dysmorphic disorder in students of the Islamic University of Riau. This study uses a quantitative method, the subjects of this study amounted to 390 students aged 18-22 years at the Islamic University of Riau using the Simple Random Sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the self-esteem scale consisting of 30 items, and the body dysmorphic disorder tendency scale consisting of 38 items. Based on the results of statistical analysis with the Pearson Product Moment correlation test, the result was a value of (r) = -0.632 with a significant 0.000. This shows that the hypothesis in this study is accepted, there is a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and the tendency to Body Dysmorphic Disorder in students of the Islamic University of Riau.
