Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between optimism and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) in students in Dumai City. CDMSE is an individual's belief in their ability to make career decisions, while optimism is a positive attitude in facing the future. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, and involved 346 students from seven universities in Dumai City who were selected based on the Krejcie and Morgan table. Data collection was carried out through distributing questionnaires using the Optimism scale which refers to the LOT-R (Life Orientation Test-Revised) and the CDMSE scale developed by Betz et al. (1996). The results of the analysis using the Spearman Rank test showed a significant positive relationship between optimism and CDMSE (r = 0.687; p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the level of optimism of students, the higher their self-efficacy in career decision making. This finding confirms the importance of developing an optimistic attitude in helping students build confidence in planning their career future.
