Abstract
Violent crimes among inmates in correctional institutions often occur, as a result of various factors that can influence psychological conditions. In 2023, cases of violence have indeed decreased from 2022, but this decrease is not significant, even though action has been taken by prison officials. The problem of this research is the Implementation of Handling Acts of Violence Against Fellow Inmates in the Class IIA Penitentiary in Pekanbaru Reviewed by the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia Regulation Number 29 of 2017 concerning Prison and Detention Rules and Obstacles in Handling Acts of Violence Against Fellow Prisoners in the Class IIA Penitentiary in Pekanbaru The research method, namely sociological or empirical legal research, is research on legal identification and legal effectiveness in social dynamics, while its nature is descriptive. The results of the research and discussion show that the implementation of handling acts of violence against fellow inmates in the Class IIA Pekanbaru Penitentiary, reviewed by the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation Number 29 of 2017 concerning the Rules of Prisons and Detention Centers, has been carried out either before or after an act of violence occurs, where the prison authorities have made efforts to prevent the occurrence of the act. violence by approaching prisoners and carrying out supervision and guidance and providing sanctions to prisoners who are proven to have committed acts of violence, but this also cannot be maximized to prevent acts of violence because the condition of prisons is experiencing overcapacity and there are psychological factors of prisoners who are very accustomed to receiving or even committing violence either during or before finally becoming a prisoner, and the obstacles in handling acts of violence against fellow prisoners at the Pekanbaru Class IIA Penitentiary are overcapacity causing a crowded environment, an imbalance between staff who supervise and inmates in the prison and a lack of facilities.
