Abstract

Adoption of Organic Fertilizer Innovation by Vegetable and Fruit Farmers at BPP Tampan Pekanbaru City. This research was supervised by Prof. Dr. H. Detri Karya, SE., MA and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ir. Marliati, M.Si. This study aims to analyze farmer characteristics, agricultural extension characteristics, farming profiles, characteristics of organic fertilizer innovation, types of innovation adoption decisions, communication channels, extension performance, government support, marketing mix, level of adoption/use of organic fertilizer, factors that influence the decision to use organic fertilizer by farmers, and strategies to increase the use of organic fertilizer by farmers. The research method used is the survey method. The selected sample amounted to 125 farmers with purposive sampling. Descriptive analysis is used to analyze farmer characteristics, agricultural extension characteristics, farming profiles, innovation characteristics, types of innovation adoption decisions, communication channels, extension performance, government support, marketing mix, level of adoption/use of organic fertilizer, and strategies to increase the use of organic fertilizer by farmers. Factors that influence the decision to use organic fertilizer by farmers are analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) method. The results showed that in general, vegetable and fruit farmers in BPP Tampan Pekanbaru City were in the productive age group. The majority of farmers' education level is equivalent to junior high school level, the number of family members of farmers generally amounts to four people, and farmers are generally experienced in doing their farming. There are five agricultural extension officers who assist vegetable and fruit farmers at BPP Tampan Pekanbaru City, which has 78 fostered farmer groups. The average land area owned by farmers is included in the medium scale with ownership status in general only hitchhiking. The amount of capital spent by farmers per growing season is relatively small and in general farmers only have one labourer. The results of the assessment of the characteristics of organic fertilizer innovation are in the very good category, the type of adoption decision is taken based on optional decisions, the communication channel that is the most source of information about organic fertilizer is the interpersonal communication channel. Assessment of extension worker performance and government support is in the poor category, the marketing mix is in the good category, and the level of adoption / use of organic fertilizer by farmers is in the poor category. Factors that have a positive and significant effect on the decision to use organic fertilizer by farmers are variable innovation characteristics. Strategies made to increase the use of organic fertilizers by farmers include: increased education and intensive training, strengthening the farmer's economy, increasing the role and government policies.
