Abstract

Polymer flooding is a chemical EOR method that is widely applied in the oil and gas industry because it is easier to apply and also cheaper. Natural materials that can be utilized in the manufacture of chitosan-based biopolymers are blood clam shells. Blood clam shells have a high chitosan content. In this study, the researchers wanted to take advantage of the chitosan content found in clam shells to be used as a material for making biopolymers which would later be applied to the application of the chemical EOR method. The steps in this research were sample preparation, chitosan isolation such as deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation, then testing the composition of chitosan with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and testing characteristics in the form of compatibility, viscosity, and thermal stability tests. This study used a salinity concentration of 15,000 ppm and at temperatures of 40°C and 60°C. SEM-EDX results showed the morphology of chitosan was irregular, wavy and porous in shape, the chitosan elements of blood clam shells consisted of C, O, Ca, Na, and Al. The clam shell biopolymer did not pass the compatibility test because it precipitated at all concentrations, salinities and temperatures. The viscosity results obtained by the blood clam shell biopolymer had the highest viscosity value of 1.42 cP at a concentration of 0.5%, thermal stability showed that the longer the biopolymer was heated, the lower the viscosity value. .
