Abstract

The problem that often occurs during drilling operations is filtration loss, which is a condition where the loss of fluid into the rock is caused by a lack of mud viscosity and causes the mud to be unable to lift the cuttings. Filtration loss can be reduced by using additives such as the Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) industry where the CMC industry is relatively expensive so it is necessary to do research using alternative materials or natural ingredients to make it more economical, one of which is corn starch. Corn starch is made by grinding and filtering corn because starch contains polymers and in drilling it functions as a fluid loss control and viscosifier. This research was conducted to determine the effect of the addition of corn starch additives and industrial CMC on the rheological value of the drilling mud. To determine the ability of corn starch to overcome filtration loss, laboratory tests were carried out by determining the rheology of the drilling mud such as viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, filtration loss and mud cake. Tests used samples of corn starch and industrial CMC with respective concentrations of 2 gr, 4 gr, 6 gr, 8 gr, and 10 gr and a mixture of 350 ml of distilled water and 22.5 gr of bentonite. The results showed that the filtration loss obtained was 17.5 ml – 12.3 ml and the mud cake obtained was a value of 1.7 mm – 1.1 mm. The results of the rheology study obtained a viscosity of 34 s/quart – 54.7 s/quart, a plastic viscosity of 9 cp – 12 cp, a gel strength of 0.24 lb/100ft2 – 0.547 lb/100ft2 and a yield point of 10 lb/100ft2 – 11 lb/ 100ft2. The addition of mass will reduce the filtration loss and mud cake and conversely, the addition of mass causes an increase in the value of viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength.
