Abstract

The use of mud in the oil and gas industry is one of the most important parts of the drilling system, because drilling mud must be given special attention in order to launch a drilling process. Obstacles that often occur are due to the presence of reactive shale/clay layers in a formation. Synthetic polymers Xhantan Gum and Cassava Starch (Manihot Esculenta) with concentrations of 1 g, 1.5 g and 2 g respectively have no effect on the rheology of drilling mud because the concentration used in this study is very less optimum so that the mud has no role. The density of drilling mud with the addition of the best polymer is 8.83 lbs/gallon with the addition of a concentration of 2 g while for cassava starch polymer at the addition of 2 g with a density of 8.82 lbs/gallon. The best drilling mud viscosity is 45.3 sec/quart with Xhantan Gum additive concentration of 2 g and for cassava starch polymer is not included in the good/great category due to the use of too little concentration in this test. The best plastic viscosity is 9.6 cp with a concentration of 2 g and cassava starch does not have a good / good category due to the less than optimum concentration in this study. The gel strength value for Xhantan Gum polymer or Cassava Starch does not have a good category due to the lack of additives as a gelling agent.
