Abstract

Religious education is so important in strengthening the faith and piety of students, so that the combination of general education and the religious education will be more perfect. The learning activities carried out by students do not always run well and according to what is expected, there are some learning difficulties found. However, not all students have difficulties in learning Islamic Studies. The students experience various difficulties in learning Islamic Studies, such as: being bored with the classroom environment, lack of concentration in learning and etc. In every activity of the teaching and learning process, the teachers of Islamic Studies always try to provide the best for students by choosing good learning methods and approaches, so that the students will have motivation to always be diligent and active in learning. This study aims to investigate the roles of Islamic Studies teachers in overcoming students’ learning difficulties at SMPN 46 Pekanbaru. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The data collection techniques of the study are observation, interview and documentation. The interviews were conducted with Islamic Studies teachers, principal and students. In conducting data analysis, the researcher applies an interactive model consisting of three components, namely: data reduction, data display and conclusion/verification. The roles of the Islamic Studies teachers in overcoming students’ learning difficulties consist of nine roles, namely: as a communicator in overcoming the students’ learning difficulties by conducting a personal approach, as an organizer by organizing the student activities, as a motivator by providing motivation to students, as a director by directing and guiding the students who have learning difficulties, as an initiator/developer of ideas in learning, as a transmitter, as a facilitator by selecting appropriate learning methods and media, and as an evaluator by evaluating the students at the end of each lesson or semester to measure the success that has been achieved.
