Abstract

This research aims to determine the reading difficulties faced by students and the role of teachers in overcoming reading difficulties for class II students at SDIP YLPI Pekanbaru. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. In this study, data was obtained from 1 class II teacher and 5 class II students. Data collection methods used include interviews, observation and documentation. Data processing uses data reduction steps, data presentation, and conclusions in data analysis. Interviews and observations were carried out for 3 days. Research data shows that the majority of class II students at SDIP YLPI Pekanbaru have reading difficulties. Where there are still students who don't know letters, have difficulty spelling, and make mistakes in replacing letters such as the letters "f" and "v". The following factors cause reading difficulties: poor recognition of letters, poor memory, letter substitution errors, difficulty spelling, and difficulty seeing long distances. Teachers can help students overcome reading difficulties by using interesting and effective learning media, increasing students' self-confidence, providing motivation, and avoiding blaming them for problems that hinder them. Teachers can also offer special reading remedial programs for students who have difficulty reading. Keywords: Difficulty, reading, students
