Abstract
The aim of this research is to find out the reasons behind the reading challenges and how these challenges impact the learning of second grade students at SDN 14 Pekanbaru. Case study methodology is used as part of the qualitative research approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews and documentation review. Parents, students and teachers at SDN 14 Pekanbaru provided information. Techniques used for data analysis include data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. According to the overall findings of the study, the following factors contribute to students' reading difficulties: lack of interest and desire to read, lack of parental attention, environmental conditions, and intelligence (students' comprehension). The impact on the learning process is that students have difficulty understanding the material, student assignment results (academic achievement), and students are slower to complete assignments compared to students who read fluently.
