Abstract

The crime of motor vehicle theft is the crime of stealing a motor vehicle, namely taking property belonging to another person illegally or against the law without the owner's permission. Because of the rampant incidents of motor vehicle theft that occur, it is necessary to have countermeasures to prevent and overcome this phenomenon. Prevention efforts through pre-emptive, preventive and repressive efforts because motor vehicle theft not only causes harm to victims but also causes public anxiety when leaving the vehicle in the parking lot, for this reason special attention is needed in dealing with incidents of motor vehicle theft. The main problem in this study among other things, the factors that cause motor vehicle theft so that the police's efforts to tackle the crime of motor vehicle theft in the Legal Area of the South Tapanuli Police can be identified. Using empirical legal research methods, namely using observation research or by way of direct surveys to the field to collect primary data and secondary data obtained from respondents through interviews as well as using open questionnaires to be used as data or information as material in writing this research. Based on the results of the research obtained by the author, it can be understood that the crime of motor vehicle theft occurs due to several factors including economic factors, individual factors, educational factors and environmental factors. Therefore the role of the police in dealing with this is to carry out routine patrols and continue to appeal to the public to always be vigilant when leaving their vehicle in the parking lot both inside the house and when outside. And further efforts when there has been a theft of a motorized vehicle the police will carry out an investigation and investigation the results of which will be submitted to the Public Prosecutor for prosecution in court.
