Abstract
Saurmatua is a status for Toba Batak people who have died and all their children are married. This research aims to find the meaning and symbols that exist in the saurmatua custom of the Toba Batak tribe with semiotic studies. The research method used in this research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach in which the informants in this study are people of the Toba Batak tribe. The results of this study were found in the activities carried out during the saurmatua ceremony with symbolic meanings, namely the unity of strength that must be maintained in a family bond, happiness, glory, prosperity that the Batak tribe must have, a symbol of kinship to bind family ties, a symbol of the integrity of the life of someone who has died in accordance with moral standards and ancestral ideals among the Toba Batak tribe community, a symbol of the last farewell to the deceased before being buried, and a symbol of strengthening the spirit and soul in the Batak tribe. The Toba Batak people believe that in the death of someone who has saurmatua status will bring blessings and joy to the descendants left behind.
