Abstract
This study aims to describe the role of teachers as mentors in enhancing the independent learning skills of first-grade students at SDN 023 Pandau Jaya and identify the challenges faced by teachers in this process. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and document reviews. The subjects of the study consist of first-grade homeroom teachers and students. The findings indicate that teachers have effectively carried out their roles through several indicators, such as understanding students, providing information, offering motivation through advice, problem-solving, and habituation. Teachers also employ individual approaches and collaborate with parents to support students' development. However, challenges such as students' lack of confidence, dependence on parents, and literacy limitations were identified. The study concludes that the teacher's role as a mentor is crucial in fostering students' independent learning, particularly through structured approaches and effective communication. This research is expected to serve as a reference for teachers and schools in developing learning strategies that support students' independence from an early age.
