Abstract

This study is motivated by the low critical thinking skills of students at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. A student must have critical thinking skills because they can make someone more open-minded and can make his/her communicate better. The problem formulation of the study is how the influence of the problembased learning model in improving students’ critical thinking skills in learning Islamic Studies in class VIII at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of problem-based learning model on students’ critical thinking skills in learning Islamic Studies in class VIII at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. This is a quantitative correlational study. The population of the study is the students in class VIII. The sampling technique of the study is saturated sampling, namely taking the total number of populations as many as 61 students. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation. The results of the study show that the alternative hypothesis of the influence of Problem-Based Learning on students’ critical thinking is accepted with a significance value of 0.000. The magnitude of the influence of the problem-based learning model on students’ critical thinking is moderate (0.425 or 42.5%). It can be predicted that if the problem-based learning model is increased, it will contribute to increasing students’ critical thinking by 0.617 or 61.7%. In conclusion, the results of the study show that there is an influence of the Problem-Based Learning Model on students’ critical thinking skills in learning Islamic Studies in class VIII at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru.
