Abstract

The Bugis community has a marriage tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. In Bugis customs, before holding a wedding ceremony, they will give wedding expenses money or what is commonly called Panai Money. Panai money in the Bugis tribe is mandatory and must be paid by the prospective groom as a form of a man's seriousness. Mahar and Panai Money are almost similar, namely both are obligations. Mahar is an obligation in Islam, while Panai Money is an obligation in the Bugis community's traditional traditions. In Islamic Law there are no provisions governing the amount or limits of dowry money. However, the law is permissible (permitted) and is left to the local community tradition according to the agreement of both parties. The problems are as follows: What are the provisions for paying Panai Money in Bugis tribal marriages in Indragiri Hilir Regency and what are the consequences of high dowries in Bugis tribal marriages in Bugis in Indragiri Hilir Regency It can be seen from this type of research that it is included in the Empirical/Sociological legal research category. By means of a direct survey to the field to collect primary data obtained from respondents either through questionnaires or interviews to be used as data or information as material in writing this research. The provisions for payment of dowry in Bugis tribal traditional marriages must go through several customary processes to carry out a marriage until the point of determining the payment of dowry, dowry, sompa and other requests, then the determination of dowry payment is determined based on the level of social strata of the Bugis tribe which is determined directly by the family of the woman. From this request, the family of the man must meet the requirements requested by the woman's family, it is not uncommon for the man's family to sell immovable property such as land, rice fields and fields to meet all of that while the property is a livelihood for the man's family. Due to the high dowry in the Bugis tribal traditional marriage in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency after holding a wedding reception, the customary legal consequences that arise are the postponement of the marriage schedule until the dowry and other requested requirements have been met, the marriage is canceled because the man's family violates the agreement on the payment of the dowry and other previously determined requirements, so that the woman's family has the right to decide and cancel the marriage.
