Abstract
This research aims to describe and group students' algebraic thinking abilities in algebra form material in class VIII of SMP Negri 34 Pekanbaru. This research approach is qualitative research with descriptive research type. The research participants were 36 students in class VIII.1 of SMP Negeri 34 Pekanbaru. The data collection instruments for this research were algebraic thinking ability test sheets, interview sheets and documentation. The data collection technique used in this research is a test technique using an algebraic thinking ability test instrument and non-test techniques in the form of interview guides and documentation. The data analysis technique is carried out through several stages including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the research results, it was found that overall, the algebraic thinking ability of students at SMP Negeri 34 Pekanbaru was classified as low, namely 63.89%. This ability can be seen according to indicators, namely the indicator of the ability to model mathematical objects into symbol form has a percentage of 100%, the indicator of the ability to think about patterns, functions, structures and objects that cannot be determined with certainty has a percentage of 17.5%, and in the indicator of the ability to solve various kinds of problems has a percentage of 32%.
