Abstract

This research focuses on the KWL (Know-Want-Learned) strategy in reading comprehension of descriptive texts. The purpose of this research is to find out how the KWL strategy can improve students' reading comprehension of descriptive text. The design of this study was classroom action research. This study was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. By using purposive sampling technique, students in VIIE were selected as the sample of this study. The sample consisted of 29 students and all of the students were female. Researchers used observation sheets, interviews, tests and field notes to collect data. The results showed that the KWL strategy is one way to teach reading comprehension of descriptive texts. Based on test scores, in the first cycle, 30% of students achieved the minimum standard score, and in the second cycle, 70% of students achieved the minimum standard score. Thus, it can be concluded that the KWL strategy significantly increases students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts. and KWL is a strategy that can make it easier for students to understand reading descriptive text.
