Abstract

An essay is a piece of writing that expresses ideas or thoughts that are put into writing and given by the reader to understand and feel what the author is experiencing. In writing essays there are still many elementary school students who experience errors in writing spelling and punctuation that are not in accordance with the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI) and not in accordance with enhanced spelling (EYD) in descriptive essays. Therefore, this study aims to analyze spelling errors in students' descriptive essays. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data collection techniques in this study are observation, interviews and tests. Based on the discussion of the data from this research, it was found that spelling errors were found in descriptive essays, namely excess letters, shortage of letters, errors in writing words and errors in periods, commas and hyphens caused by students who did not understand spelling and punctuation. It can be concluded that the percentage of spelling errors in student description essays is 50% and is included in the moderate error category. There were 70 mistakes in writing words, 72 mistakes in using capital letters and 66 mistakes in using punctuation marks.
