Abstract

Based on the researcher’s experience in the first semester of college, students often experience anxiety when speaking English, therefore this research was conducted to find out the factors that cause anxiety in speaking English and the factors that most dominantly influence anxiety in speaking English. This research was conducted with qualitative research. It applied descriptive qualitative to answer the research questions. The result of this data is taken from 1st semester A and B of FKIP UIR Class, and the sample was 31 students. The data were collected from a questionnaire. According to the questionnaire, the result was used to examine the levels of students’ speaking anxiety, It was found that 21 students (64 %) felt Relaxed, 5 students (18 %) felt Very relaxed and 5 students (18 %) felt Mildly anxious. Based on the Results of the Questionnaire, there 3 indicators of anxiety it’s communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. Communication apprehension is 33 % of student anxiety, test anxiety 35 %, and then fear negative evaluation 32 %. it can be concluded that the most dominant speaking anxiety felt by students is test anxiety.
