Abstract

ABSTRACT Resti Prastica Agustian (2023): Pragmalinguistics Failure in Essay Writing by Students of English Language Education of FKIP UIR KEYWORDS: Pragmalinguitics, Essay Writing Pragmalinguistics failure often occurs because foreign language learners use the target language that is inconsistent with the linguistic habits of speakers of the target language, or adopt expressions from the original language. The study aims to analyze pragmalinguistic failures in Essay writing. In conducting this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative. The population was students who took essay writing subject, about 56 students. The researcher used purposive sampling to take the samples from which the researcher took representative sample of 30 students in one class. The technique used to collect the data is a documentation which was collecting the data through students’ writing papers. Researcher analyzed students essay writing which focused on verbose apposition, combination of two subordinate clauses, misunderstanding of words, Indonesian construction of sentences, run-on sentences, independent subordinate clauses, the omission of relative pronouns. Finally, the researcher concluded there are four kinds of pragmalinguistic failure that found in students’ essay writing. The failures were misunderstandings of words, native (Indonesian) construction of sentences, run-on sentences, the omission of relative pronouns. The dominant pragmalinguistic failure found was the misunderstandings of words with the total 76 failures samples.
