Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the important sub-skills in speaking English. The importance of pronunciation in speaking stems from improperly pronouncing a consonant or only a vowel in a word might result in different meanings. This study aims to determine students' pronunciation errors in students’ pronouncing English long and short vowels through the English Pronunciation IPA application and to find out the factors that influence their pronunciation difficulties. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method design. This research was conducted at SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru. The sample of this study was first-grade students with a total of 15 students. The researcher used two instruments in collecting data; a pronunciation test and an interview. The English Pronunciation IPA application is used as a tool in students' long and short vowel pronunciation tests. Then, the researcher gave 5 questions and chose 5 students to interview. Based on the research findings, the students' pronunciation test using the English Pronunciation IPA application found that the average score of students' pronunciation was 9.13, with a value ranging from 3.04 to the "Medium" category for long vowels and then for short vowels the average value 14.73 with values ranging from 3.50 to the "Medium" category. Most of the students made an error in pronouncing long vowels in the sound /i:/, while the most errors in pronouncing short vowels were in the sound /?/. Then, the factors that influence students' difficulties in English pronunciation are interference and phonological understanding.
