Abstract

Reading is one of the four language skills that can be used to communicate. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. Researchers get data sources in the form of observations, test and documentation. The test consists of 20 questions for reading and understanding recount text questions. Data were collected from 30 grade VIII students of SMPN 35 Pekanbaru and the researcher used multiple choice tests. The results of this study indicate that the dominant reading problem faced by class VIII students of SMPN 35 Pekanbaru is limited vocabulary. Some students cannot pronounce words well, because the vocabulary is too foreign or they rarely use it. The results of this study found that the student's highest score was 100 and the lowest score was 60, these results obtained based on the assessment of the test. The data showed that the calculation of total score is 2390, while the mean value of students is 79,66, median value of the test is 80 and the modus value of the test is 80.
