Abstract

this research was to determine the level of reading interest and the factors that influence students’reading interest at the sixth semester English Language Education in FKIP Universitas Islam Riau in reading English journal articles. The research used qualitative approach by using descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was to determine the level of students’ reading interest in English journal articles, interview was to obtain more in-depth information related to students’ reading English journal articles. This research use the purposive sampling. In this study, researcher focus on one class is 6B, overall students in class 6B are 34 people. Researcher will give questionnaires to 34 students at the sixth semester, English Language Education, FKIP-UIR. Next, five students will be taken as informants for in-depth interviews. From the results of the research, researcher found the level based on an analysis 5 indicators with 23 statement of interest in reading English journal articles for students at the sixth semester English Language Education, FKIP-UIR on average was at very high level with the following details: Attention (94%) students got “Very High” category, Use of time (85%) students got “Very High” category, Motivation to read (95%) students got “Very High” category, Emotion in reading (84%) students got “Very High” category, and Effort to use (82%) students got “Very High” category. Meanwhile, the result of researh through interview found more in-depth information about the factors that influence students’ reading interest, namely as follow : Lectures reading material, Willingness to Read, Encouragement to Read, Reading Habit, Benefits for Language Skills. Students stated that reading English journal articles could improve English language skills such as grammar, increase vocabulary, broaden knowledge, be able to think critically, and be able to understand the contents of scientific readings using academic language whose vocabulary was sometimes difficult to understand. Therefore, it is these factors that influence the high reading interest of class 6B students at the sixth semester English Language Education, FKIP-UIR, so that students are still getting used to reading journal articles in English.
