Abstract
The Independent Student Exchange Program (PMM) provides opportunities for students to learn in a new environment with a different culture. Outbound PMM students of the Islamic University of Riau (UIR) face communication challenges, such as language differences, customs and social norms that affect their interactions. This study aims to understand the communication experience of UIR outbound PMM students in adjusting to a new environment through Alfred Schutz's phenomenological approach. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, in which data is collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. The results of this study show that students' decision to participate in the PMM program is influenced by external factors, such as the role of lecturers, inbound students, friends and social media (Because of Motive). Their goals (In Order to Motive) include improving adaptation skills, academic development, cultural exploration, and expanding social networks. Students also face various challenges, such as language barriers, food, differences in social rules and transportation. However, these experiences have a positive impact in the form of communication skills, openness of mindset, and higher social awareness.
