Abstract
Dependence on social media is becoming an increasingly widespread phenomenon among college students, especially in the fast-paced digital era. This study aims to explore students' experiences in conducting a social media detox as a strategy to overcome media dependence. This study uses the Media Resistance theory , which places digital detox as part of the tradition of resistance to media and technology. This detox phenomenon has been widely known and practiced by various groups, including students, becoming the focus of this study, especially for Communication Science students at the Islamic University of Riau. This study uses a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method and Data obtained through interview methods with 5 informants who have or are currently conducting a social media detox . The results of the study show that students are beginning to realize the negative impacts of social media, such as disruption to daily activities, the emergence of anxiety due to Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), and boredom with exposure to irrelevant information. This awareness encourages them to detox with steps such as limiting access, logging out of accounts, and replacing social media playing time with more productive activities, such as developing hobbies or increasing direct social interaction. This study concludes that social media detox is an effective method to overcome media addiction and is a real manifestation of resistance to the influence of social media. The results of this study provide important insights for students in building a healthy relationship with social media and become a reference for educational efforts related to managing wise media use.
