Abstract

Students' mathematical problem solving ability is extremely important because it allows them to solve contextual problems more easily. This study aims to see the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students’ mathematical problem solving ability in class IX SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru. This research is a quasi-experimental research with Non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling of classes IX.1 to IX.5. The population of this study were students of class IX SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru consisting of classes IX.1 to IX.5. The samples of this study were class IX.4 which amounted to 33 students as the experimental class and class IX.5 which amounted to 33 students as the control class. The data collection instrument used was a mathematical problem solving ability test. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive data analysis and inferential data analysis. The results of this study show that there is an average difference between the mathematical problem solving ability of experimental and control class students after being given different treatments. This is based on the t-test (Independent Sample T-Test) obtained a significance value (sig. 2-tailed) = 0,000 with ? = 0,05 so that the significance value (sig. 2-tailed) is smaller than ? [0,000 < 0,05]. So it can be concluded that ? 0 is rejected and ? 1 is accepted, which means that there is an effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the students’ mathematical problem solving ability of class IX SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru.
