Abstract
Current technological developments with advances in the field of composites, which makes all aspects related to technology develop. Bamboo fiber was chosen as a composite reinforcement material because it is very abundant. This research aims to make composite boards from bamboo fiber with a polyester resin binder. In this research, a mixture of bamboo fiber and polyester resin was used in different ratios, starting from 40% bamboo fiber: 60% polyester resin. 50% bamboo fiber: 50% polyester resin and 60% bamboo fiber: 40% polyester resin. The highest tensile strength test results occurred in specimen 2 with a mixture of 50% bamboo fiber: 50% polyester resin which had a tensile strength value of 19.50 MPa with an impact value of 0.501 Joule/mm2. This was due to the influence of variations in the mixture of bamboo fiber and polyester resin on tensile strength, where the greater the bamboo fiber mixture and the smaller the polyester resin mixture will affect the elastic strain and tensile stress. In the impact mechanism, it can be seen that in specimen 1, the type of brittle fracture and the fracture shape is regular, and in specimen 2 and specimen 3, the brittle fracture is stringy and the fracture shape is irregular. The fibrous brittle nature is characterized by the release of bonds between the matrix and fiber which is followed by the appearance of broken fiber ends on the fracture surface (fiber pull out) which can be seen by visual (macro) observation.
