Abstract

Preheat is part of the heat treatment process before welding. The goal is to reduce the humidity of the welding area and to lower the temperature gradient so as to minimize problems such as distortion and excess residual stress. To obtain the distortion, width of the HAZ and microstructure at each preheat temperature. The variation of the preheat temperature given is without preheat, 150 oC, 200 oC, 250 oC. Testing was carried out by giving preheat temperature variations on both different specimens before welding, followed by unifying the specimen with SMAW welding, followed by splitting each specimen for macro etching and micro etching to see the width of the HAZ and microstructure on each specimen that had been given a variation in preheat temperature. From the results of the study, the highest distortion occurs at the temperature without preheat and the distortion continues to decrease dramatically until the preheat is 200 oC. The steepest distortion drop is between 150 oC and 200 oC preheat. SS41 steel has a larger width where the higher the preheat given, the greater the width of the HAZ that occurs in SS41 steel. Meanwhile, SUS316 stainless shows a decreasing width where the greater the preheat given, the smaller the HAZ width that occurs in SUS316 stainless steel. From SS41 and SUS316 steels in HAZ with base metal, it can be concluded that the largest grain size is found in HAZ SUS316 with a preheat of 200 oC with a size of 4716.074 ?m2. Meanwhile, in SS41, the largest grain size is found in base metal with a size of 579.78 ?m2 at preheat of 150 oC. With a larger grain size, the ferrite is also larger. Meanwhile, if the grain size is smaller, it will make pearlite more scattered.
