Abstract

The presence of U-Turns affects traffic flow stability, especially during peak hours. U-Turns are designed to facilitate vehicle turning maneuvers but also impact road operations, including speed reduction, increased congestion, and longer queues. This study analyzes the operational impact of U-Turns on traffic characteristics on H.R. Soebrantas Street through direct surveys to collect data on traffic volume, speed, delay, queue length, and U-turn geometry. The analysis was conducted at two U-Turn locations, focusing on delay and queue length based on PPPB 2005 and field observations, level of service according U-Turn to PKJI 2023, and speed changes before and after the U-Turn. The results show that queue lengths based on PPPB 2005 were only 4.59 m, significantly smaller than the observed field measurements of 167.93 m. The degree of saturation was recorded at 0.73 (Level D) for U-Turn 1 and 0.90 (Level E) for U-Turn 2. The average vehicle speed increased from 29 km/h before the UTurn to 38 km/h after passing through it. Therefore, it is recommended to widen the median opening or add a dedicated lane to improve traffic performance and reduce congestion.
