Abstract
Vocabulary was an important component in language learning, as good understanding and mastery of vocabulary could facilitate communication and comprehension of texts in that language. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties faced by female students of Islamic Junior High School 1 Pekanbaru in learning Arabic vocabulary, particularly those in class 8.4. The study used a qualitative approach with a questionnaire and interview method involving 41 students and an in-depth interview with one Arabic language teacher. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques to identify the factors influencing the difficulties in learning vocabulary. The results of the study showed that the difficulties encountered by the students included cognitive, emotional, learning environment, and teaching method aspects. Cognitively, many students had difficulty remembering new vocabulary, especially due to a lack of repetition and use of vocabulary in real-life contexts. Emotionally, anxiety and a lack of self-confidence when using vocabulary in speaking or exams were major obstacles. Environmental support, both from family and peers, was perceived as insufficient, although some students felt helped by classroom interactions. The teacher also mentioned that the teaching methods used needed to be more varied and should emphasize more on the practical use of vocabulary in conversations. Based on these findings, it was suggested that Arabic vocabulary teaching should pay more attention to the use of technology and more interactive methods, as well as enhance social support for students in the learning process.
