Abstract

The Effectiveness of Extrinsic and Intrinsic Reward Methods on Students’ Learning Motivation and Outcomes in Grade VII at MTsN 3 Pekanbaru SYARIFAH NURHIDAYA 212710008 This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of external and internal rewards on students’ motivation and outcomes in learning Arabic language in grade VII at MTsN 3 Pekanbaru. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, consisting of two experimental groups—one receiving external rewards (prizes, praise) and the other receiving internal rewards (intrinsic motivation reinforcement, personal satisfaction)—and one control group that did not receive any rewards. The data colection techniques of the study were motivational questionnaires, learning outcome tests, and observations, then the data were analyzed by using t-tests to measure the differences among the groups, linear regression to determine the relationship between rewards and motivation, and N-Gain tests to measure improvements in learning outcomes. The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the groups receiving external and internal rewards in improving students’ learning motivation and outcomes (p <0.05). Regression analysis also revealed that the reward method had a positive impact on learning motivation (R² = 0.403) and learning outcomes (R² = 0.415). Meanwhile, the N-Gain test showed that the experimental groups that received rewards experienced a higher increase in learning outcomes (N-Gain = 79%) compared to the control group (N-Gain = 21%). In conclusion, the external and internal rewards were effective in increasing students’ motivation and outcomes in learning Arabic language, with the internal rewards having a greater impact on building long-term motivation, so that this can be a reference for teachers in developing more effective learning strategies.
