Abstract

This research aims to analyze how much influence variations in types of used engine oil with different SAE codes as burner fuel for aluminum smelting (drink cans) have on combustion characteristics. The method used is an experiment where laboratory testing is done to determine the viscosity (thickness) of the used engine oil used and combustion to determine the combustion characteristics of used oil from motorbike engines (SAE 15W-40), cars (SAE 20W-50), excavators (SAE 40), and hydraulic (SAE 10). The results show that used SAE 15W-40 motorbike engine oil with the lowest viscosity (thickness) of 168.48 cSt has the highest level of combustion efficiency with a flame temperature reaching 834°C with the fastest fuel consumption time in consuming 1 liter of 4392 s, Meanwhile, used engine oil which has the lowest flame temperature is used SAE 10 hydraulic engine oil with a flame temperature of 706?C and the slowest in consuming 1 liter of oil with a time of 5040 s due to the still high viscosity with a value of 220.05 cSt. . And the resulting flame color obtained from the four variations of used engine oil is red. The conclusion of this research is that of the four variations of used engine oil, SAE 15W-40 used motorbike engine oil is the most efficient for use as aluminum smelting fuel compared to other types of used oil. It is recommended to use SAE 15W-40 used motor engine oil in aluminum smelting applications for better efficiency.
