Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the efforts of Islamic Studies teachers in improving students’ responsible characters towards school environment at SMP YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan of Pekanbaru City. This was a qualitative study conducted with a descriptive analysis method. The data collection techniques of the study were observation and interview. The results of preliminary study found that there were still many students who did not have a sense of responsibility towards the school environment. Many of them littered, did not take good care of school equipment and discipline time. These problems needed to be overcome through the teachers' efforts in improving the students’ responsible characters by providing encouragement, advice and motivation in improving their responsible characters. In improving the responsible characters, parental involvement is also very necessary. Because with the involvement of parents, it can make it easier to improve the students’ responsible characters. So the efforts made by the Islamic Studies teachers in improving the students’ responsible characters were by providing direction and motivation as well as involving the students in order to create a sense of responsibility for the environment. The results of the study can be concluded that with the efforts of teachers in improving the students’ responsible characters, they became to have more responsible characters towards themselves and the environment around them.
