Abstract
Areca nut fiber and pineapple leaf fiber are types of fibers derived from natural fibers that are interesting to be studied as composite reinforcing fibers because they are currently very abundant. This research aims to make composite boards made from areca nut fiber and pineapple leaf fiber with polyester resin metrics on mechanical strength. This research varies different mixtures starting from areca nut fiber: pineapple leaf fiber: polyester resin, namely 20%: 30% : 50%, 25% : 25% : 50% and 30%: 20% : 50% using the layer method (hand lay up) was carried out three times in making composite board specimens. The highest bending strength results in sample one with a mixture of 20% areca nut fiber, 30% pineapple leaf fiber and 50% polyester resin which is 52.60 Mpa, the impact price is 0.379 Joule/mm2. This is due to the influence of the mixture of fibers and metrics which results in an increased modulus elasticity value and because there is an influence from the fiber density, where the smaller the density value will increase the mechanical strength of both bending strength and impact price. This phenomenon can be seen from macro observations, namely the composite board experiencing fiber pull out with a type of filamentous brittle fracture.
