Abstract

Politeness in every speech is essential for speakers, especially in interrogative utterances. Communication activities will work well if speakers and interlocutors use good and polite language. Polite language can be measured based on the Leech politeness scale. Based on this, this study aims to describe the shape of the language politeness scale in Kick Andy's speech with the theme Fear Behind Umar Patek's Freedom on Youtube. The method in this research is the content analysis method because, in this research, the writer will identify the data, then classify the research data. The data collection techniques used were documentation, free-involved viewing, and note-taking strategies. The results of this study describe the form of a politeness scale, namely a scale of advantages and disadvantages of 99 utterances, a ranking of choice of 41 phrases, a scale of indirectness of 33 terms, a scale of authority of 1 representation, and also a hierarchy of social distance. Speech data was not found. The final result of this research is that the utterances used in the Kick Andy talk show with the theme Fear Behind Umar Patek's Freedom are classified as impolite speeches. Speeches classified as polite are 61 utterances, while speeches classified as rude are 113. Thus the talk show Kick Andy's Fear Behind Umar Patek's Freedom was found to be more impolite. This research is helpful for language users so that when speaking, they pay more attention to whether or not the speech delivered is polite.
