Abstract

Alai Village is located on the coast of Tebing Tinggi Island, where the residents rely on groundwater as a source of clean water to meet their daily needs. However, shallow groundwater in residential areas relatively close to the sea often has brackish to salty taste, unpleasant odor, and causes rust on household appliances, rendering it unfit for use due to failing to meet both physical and chemical quality standards. This study aims to determine the distribution and flow of shallow groundwater, map the quality of shallow groundwater in the study area based on physical and chemical parameters, assess its suitability for use, identify the lithology of the area, and analyze the facies of shallow groundwater. The results of physical-chemical parameter measurements were compared with the Permenkes No. 492 of 2010 on drinking water quality standards and Permenkes No. 32 of 2017 on water quality standards for hygiene and sanitation purposes. Based on the study, the color of groundwater in the area was found to be clear (6%), cloudy (40%), yellow (27%), and brown (27%). The taste of groundwater was identified as tasteless (27%), brackish (13%), metallic (13%), and salty (47%). The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of groundwater ranged between 482– 2180 mg/L, while the electrical conductivity (EC) ranged between 788–3490 µS/cm. The pH values of groundwater ranged from 5 to 9.08. Iron (Fe) concentrations varied from 0.476–8.99 mg/L, and manganese (Mn) concentrations ranged from 0.02–0.80 mg/L. The Piper diagram analysis conducted was tested to represent the research area showing the types of Na+K+Cl+SO4 and Cl-SO4, with water eligibility that is not suitable for consumption and use, as well as clay and peat lithology types containing iron and manganese.
