Abstract

Basic geology learning often faces challenges in visualizing the physical characteristics of real rocks, especially with two-dimensional media that tend to be boring. This study aims to develop an Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning application using the markerless method to make it easier for students to understand the types of rocks. This application is designed using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) approach which includes the stages of concept, design, material collection, combination, testing, and distribution. With a focus on three types of rocks (dunite, limestone, and gneiss), this application provides interactive 3D visualization that can be accessed via Android devices. Testing shows that the application is able to display objects at a distance of 10–250 cm with a minimum light intensity of 5 lux. The results of user evaluations state that this application is effective in improving understanding and attracting interest in learning. This research is expected to make a significant contribution to the innovation of technology-based interactive learning media.
