Abstract

Bipolar disorder is a type of psychological disorder that is characterized by abnormal mood swings. The exact cause of bipolar disorder is still unknown, but it can be caused by biological factors, the surrounding environment, and disturbances in brain nerve function. This disorder can last a lifetime, but it can be managed with medication, psychotherapies, and long-term treatment. Bipolar disorder shares similarities with other mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, making it difficult to diagnose. To help detect the early symptoms of bipolar disorder, an expert system has been developed to aid in the diagnosis process. The system uses forward chaining to search for patterns and the certainty factor method from the MYCIN application to handle uncertainty. Furthermore, the system is web-based, making it easily accessible to users. Based on the results of the system implementation, the sensitivity value is 10%, the accuracy value is 90% and the questionnaire results are 95% which shows that this expert system can identify the type of bipolar disorder with a certainty factor value along with the treatment solution.
