Abstract
This study examined conversational implicatures in the Mean Girls movie. The research applied Grice's theory of conversational implicature as the primary framework and incorporated Akhmad Saifuddin's (2020) interpretation for additional insights. The research aimed to identify flouted maxims that built conversational implicature in Mean Girls. The study utilized a descriptive-qualitative method. The data were gathered from the first 30 minutes of the movie's dialogues, using observation and documentation techniques. The primary instrument was the researcher, who analyzed the implicatures through systematic categorization based on Grice's conversational maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. Supporting tools included transcripts and note-taking to ensure comprehensive analysis. The findings revealed 37 pieces of data categorized into conversational implicature. The characters frequently flouted the maxim of relation 12 times by changing the topic of conversation or avoiding direct interaction and exposing hidden messages. Furthermore, characters typically flouted the maxim of manner 12 times through statements that were too complex, ambiguous, or both, leaving space for humor or interpretation. The maxim of quality was flouted 9 times, primarily through sarcasm and lies. Lastly, the maxim of quantity was flouted 4 times by characters who gave either too much or too little information.
