Abstract

Exploration and production of oil and gas require efficient techniques to enhance oil recovery from reservoirs. One of the factors that affect the efficiency of oil recovery is the wettability of the reservoir rock. One method that can address the issue of production decline is using Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) through chemical EOR methods, specifically surfactants. Surfactants can reduce interfacial tension (IFT) and alter the wettability of reservoir rocks. This study uses anionic surfactants, which are expected to change the wettability of sandstone containing kaolinite clay. Spontaneous imbibition tests will be conducted in this study to assess the capability and success of a surfactant mixture in achieving wettability index values. The results of this study indicate that the wettability index of surfactant AEC is higher (1.42) compared to the wettability index generated by surfactant LABS (1.17). This shows that surfactant AEC is more effective in altering the wettability of sandstone containing clay compared to surfactant LABS. The type of clay and surfactant concentration affect rock wettability. The presence of kaolinite clay tends to make the wettability of sandstone oil-wet. Furthermore, a 1% surfactant concentration yields a higher IW value (1.42) compared to the 2% surfactant concentration, which has an IW value of 1.17, in altering the wettability of the rock to water-wet. This does not mean that injecting a higher concentration of surfactant leads to the optimal wettability index value.
