Abstract

Semiotic Analysis of the Meaning of the Simalungun Traditional Wedding Procession in Simalungun Regency Lidia Benitasari Purba 199110072 The Simalungun tribal wedding ceremony is an integral part of the cultural heritage that lives and develops in the area. This traditional ceremony reflects cultural and customary values that are manifested through physical objects, food, and speech. This study aims to find out the message conveyed by looking for the meaning of the symbols used in describing human relations contained in the Simalungun traditional wedding ceremony. This research is a type of qualitative research study of ethnographic communication, which is carried out by observing in the field, conducting direct interviews with informants and documenting it in the form of photographs. The results of the study were analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method, so that denotation meanings can be identified, especially connotative meanings that depend on each procession of the Simalungun traditional wedding ceremony. the results of the research from the findings of the data obtained by the researcher show that the process of carrying out the wedding procession, both during pre-wedding and traditional parties cannot be separated from the life principles of Tolu Sahundulan and Lima Saodoran which are held by the Simalungun community. the entire process of the Simalungun traditional wedding ceremony contains the meaning of the existence and relationship contained in Tolu Sahundulan and Lima Saodoran.
