Abstract

In petroleum production, the water that is produced will mix with oil to form a stable emulsion because of the content of asphalt and resin (natural surfactant). So that to meet the quality standards of injection water and so as not to pollute the environment, chemical demulsification is carried out to reduce the oil content in the water. One material that can break down these emulsions is graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs). The use of GONs as demulsifiers is worth considering because of their environmentally friendly nature and simple synthesis. This study aims to look at the use of GONs in improving demulsification efficiency and their effect on the interaction of oil particles in water. This research was conducted with experimental methods consisting of the process of synthesizing GONs, characterization test of GONs, demulsification test of sample variations of 5% emulsion O/W without GONs and with the use of GONs namely 0.04 gr, 0.06 gr, 0.08 gr and 0.1 gr, as well as zeta potential and interfacial tension tests to analyze particle interactions and stability of O/W emulsions with GONs or without the use of GONs. From the study, it was obtained that GONs were successfully synthesized into amphiphilic material and contained functional groups that were useful as demulsifiers. The results of the O/W emulsion demulsification test are more efficient with the use of GONs, where the maximum efficiency is obtained at 0.1 gr GONs of 82% and without GONs by only utilizing gravity by 44%. The use of GONs showed an almost 2-fold increase. Analysis of zeta potential test showed that the use of GONs succeeded in changing the interaction between oil particles in O/W emulsions. The use of GONs in emulsions resulted in a significant decrease in zeta potential values from without GONs worth -69.9 mV down to -49.4 mV with GONs. This indicates that the interaction forces of the particles become weaker to repel each other, thus causing the oil particles to be easier to close together and flocculate.
