Abstract
The need for river cast sand, which is widely used as a construction material, is relatively expensive, and its mining can damage the environment, resulting in limited availability, so a different type of sand is needed, namely urug sand to minimize the use of cast sand. This study aims to determine the effect of using a mixture of Danau Bingkuang cast sand and Garuda Sakti Urug sand on the compressive strength of paving blocks and to determine the optimal mixture composition that produces compressive strength that is included in the SNI-03-0691-1996 quality standard. This research was conducted experimentally with the compressive strength test method based on SNI 03-0691-1996. The test specimens were cubes with the size of 10.5 cm x 10.5 cm x 10.5 cm made by mechanical method. The composition ratio used was 1Pc : 4Ps with variations in the mixture of cast sand and urug sand used, namely (100% PsC: 0% PsU), (95% PsC: 5% PsU), (85% PsC: 15% PsU), (70% PsC: 30% PsU), (30% PsC: 70% PsU), (15% PsC: 85% PsU), (5% PsC: 95% PsU), (0% PsC: 100% PsU). Compressive strength testing was carried out at the age of 28 days. The average compressive strength results were 43.5 MPa, 44.8 MPa, 39.8 MPa, 37.2 MPa, 31.1 MPa, 28.7 MPa, 27.6 MPa, and 21.7 MPa respectively. The conclusion from the test results shows that the use of a mixture of cast sand and urug sand can increase the compressive strength value in the composition (95% Ps Cor : 5% Ps Urug). For the next mixture, the compressive strength decreases until the composition (0% Ps Cor : 100 Ps Urug). The more urug sand mixture, the lower the compressive strength value. From the results of compressive strength, two different qualities are obtained, namely quality A and quality B. Quality A is obtained in variations (100% Ps Cor : 0% Urug sand) to (70% Ps Cor : 30 Ps Urug). Meanwhile, quality B is obtained in the variation (30% Ps Cor : 70% Urug Sand) to (0% Ps Cor : 100% Ps Urug).
