Abstract

The oil industry, both onshore and offshore, contains produced water, the amount of which continues to increase along with the increase in the ratio of wells with produced water content, which can reach 98% or with a water to oil ratio of 3:1 to 4:1. In reality, this produced water is waste that can damage the environment. However, this produced water can be processed into usable water through several processing methods, one of which is considered sufficient is the filtration method using filter media. However, the use of filter media in this filtration method must be based on two aspects, namely selecting the right media and regeneration of the filter media. Choosing the right filter media for the filtration method is important because this filter media will then separate suspended particles from the water or what is called adsorption. Activated carbon is one of the filtration media that is considered the most effective in treating waste water and can be made from any material that has a reasonable carbon element content. Like sugarcane bagasse because it has a carbon content of 90.22% and wallnut shell has properties that are resistant to high pressure during backwashing.
